I saw her cry.
An usual day on the streets of Beijing; it was cold November, early in the morning at 5. I assumed no stores would be open at this time, and yet the growling of my stomach couldn’t seem to constrain itself from making a noise at this time of day. But it had been covered up by the sound of a melody, and being a natural musician, I followed the sound of music till I stopped by a small cafe at the very corners of the street. The shop was small, but intricately designed; the whites painted a shiny beige, outlined by light golden engravings. The owner of the shop didn’t seem to notice me walking in and the song continued. When the song finally ended, she turned around and saw me. ‘Oh my, I’m sorry, were you here the whole time?’ she asked. Her shining eyes sparkled as the colors of the evening still scattered itself on the sky. I smiled and nodded, then ordering myself a croissant and a cup of coffee, I sat down by the window nearest to the counter and counted the shops that slowly opened…one by one. The owner of the shop continued making her specialty; caramel macchiato she said. I remembered a friend who liked that a lot, and then I stepped out of the shop as the rising sun poured its lights on me.
I came again the next day and once again she had her music on, only this time she was dancing. After the music ended, she didn’t seem as starttled by my presense as she did the first time. I ordered the same black coffee, and she continued making her macchiato. Before I left, I asked for her name. ‘Song Qian’ she said, ‘but you can call me Victoria’. I left the shop without realizing I hadn’t told her my name, but those words and the way she said it kept replaying itself on my mind.
Going to the cafe became a habit of mines, and I brought along some of my friends once. It started out as a nice conversation, and we all seemed to be getting along. Then someone mentioned the name…Cho Kyuhyun. She stopped and stared at us, no longer was that sparkle in her eyes, but a clear liquid covered the pupils within her iris. That smile she carried faded away, and Nichkhun, who had been enthusiastically trying to get close to her, had to open his big mouth and tell her ‘he’s getting married soon.’
She brushed away the tears in her eyes and walked slowly to the counter; the caramel macchiato sitting there…ice cold. And then it struck me, she loved him…she loved him so much, but he forgot her. And she made his favorite drink every single day, hoping for a day where he might walk in, hearing the sound of their song, and join in with the dance. That never happened.
We stopped going to the shop afterwards, and when I passed by the store in the morning, I no longer heard the sound of that song “seven years of love” playing, and no longer was the beautiful fairy dancing. One of those peculiar mornings, she stopped me on my way, tears in her eyes once again. Something in my heart clenched seeing her saddened face, and I saw her holding something; the wedding invitation. She told me how she needed to make sure everything would go well at the wedding, she needed to make sure that she wouldn’t embarass him as one of his friends, and how she needed to buy them the best wedding present of all. Holding back all the anger, my insides were at war. Why didn’t she know how to think for herself. What happened to the bright girl who always smiled even at 5 in the morning, who was stubborn about her ways of life, and who held on strongly to her morals. I held in urge to hold her tightly, but I gave up. She squirmed a little in my embrace before she finally calmed down. I heard her whisper his name, and some stingy feeling came over me as I took the wedding invitation and ripped it up in half. ‘There’s no point in holding back your feelings. You love him.’ I said. And she cried once last time, in my arms. ‘Lee Donghae’ I said. From now on, you can call my name…Lee Donghae.
